Mayavi - Cave Lounge 'N' Bar
A Hospitality Experience Sculpted by Nature
Mayavi is a premium cave-themed restaurant and lounge designed to redefine experiential hospitality. Conceived as more than a dining destination, the project was envisioned as an emotional journey one that transports guests into a timeless world inspired by the mystery of ancient caves, handcrafted artistry, and immersive architecture.
Rather than replicating a natural cave, the design captures the feeling of discovering one. Every surface was carefully sculpted into a continuous architectural form where walls, ceilings, and structural elements merge seamlessly, eliminating conventional straight lines and flat planes. The result is an organic environment that feels as though it has been carved by nature over centuries.
The interiors are entirely handcrafted through multiple stages of sculpting and finishing, creating richly textured surfaces that evoke the depth and character of natural stone. Every curve, recess, and transition was meticulously developed to blur the boundary between architecture and sculpture, inviting guests to experience the space not only visually but through touch and movement.
Lighting plays a vital role in shaping the atmosphere. Concealed sources and skylight-inspired openings allow warm light to wash across the textured surfaces, producing dynamic shadows that continuously transform the space and reinforce the illusion of a living cave.
To deepen the narrative, every mural within the restaurant was hand-painted by artists, drawing inspiration from ancient cave art and forgotten civilizations. These artworks become an integral part of the architecture, enriching the storytelling and creating moments of discovery throughout the journey.
The furniture was custom designed exclusively for the project, with several handcrafted wooden pieces produced by skilled artisans from Bali. Their craftsmanship introduces warmth and authenticity while complementing subtle influences drawn from Mayan architecture expressed not through literal replication, but through sculptural forms, timeless proportions, and an enduring sense of mystery.
Behind the immersive experience lies an equally complex engineering achievement. More than twenty building services including HVAC systems, fresh air ducts, electrical conduits, fire protection, sprinklers, lighting, audio systems, CCTV, and maintenance access were seamlessly integrated within the continuously curved architectural shell. Every technical component was carefully concealed to preserve the purity of the spatial experience, allowing guests to engage only with the architecture and never the infrastructure that supports it.
A defining aspect of the project was the complete creative freedom entrusted to the design team by a client who is himself an artist. This collaborative relationship encouraged experimentation with materials, craftsmanship, and artistic expression, enabling every detail to be explored without compromise and resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind hospitality destination.
Mayavi is ultimately a celebration of architecture, engineering, craftsmanship, art, and storytelling. It demonstrates how hospitality design can transcend aesthetics to create meaningful experiences that linger in memory long after the visit has ended.
At Ken Architects, we believe great hospitality spaces are not simply designed they are experienced. Mayavi stands as a testament to that philosophy, transforming architecture into a destination that evokes curiosity, wonder, and lasting emotion.
